GillianToliver is a multidisciplinary artist currently living and working in Toronto. Her work examines intersections of identity, thefluidity of being and her own personal relationship with community, femininityand domestic space. Toliver explores the primordial space between subconsciousand conscious thought and action, and by infusing feminist thought intoFreudian centered ideology, she examines how self is systematically censoredand controlled.

Toliver deals with her own inability to connect seemingly enigmatic andanamorphic fragments of identity by creating new bodies in which to pour andbind self to; letting these fragments have the unspoken conversations that the shecan not. Working in a variety of mediums, including drawing, paintingand sculpture, materiality becomes a method of acknowledging the multiplicityand fluidity of being. Eliminating the foreign gaze historically imposed on femmefigures, Toliver creates installations exploring how bodies interact whenundefined by this pressure.
